Monday, August 1st, 1988: The Silverbacks received bad news this morning. Curt Schilling will miss 13 months due to a torn ulnar collateral ligament. In the Walnut Grove-Santa Ana game he sustained the injury while throwing a pitch. "I'm disappointed more than anything," he told reporters later in the day. "You can't help your team on the bench," Schilling sighed. "I'll do the rehab work and hope for a quick recovery."

Monday, August 1st, 1988: Any time a rookie makes a splash on the scene, it's got to be great for his career potential. Just ask Rusty Richards, who put together a stellar month out of the pen. The Santa Ana Hydras closer, 23, kept the opposition off balance all month as he held them to a .200 average and walked away with the Sub League 2 Pitcher of the Month award for July.
Richards posted a 3-0 mark and a 0.00 ERA in 12 relief appearances. In 11.2 innings, he had 7 saves, 10 strikeouts, and 8 walks.
This year Richards has collected 10 saves. In all he has made 20 relief appearances, thrown 18.2 innings, struck out 17 and walked 9. His record shows 3 wins and 1 loss with a 4.34 earned run average. |

Monday, August 1st, 1988: Mike Smithson of the New Britain Rock Cats was on top of his game the entire month of July, capping it off with the Sub League 1 Pitcher of the Month honors.
He was outstanding in 6 starts with 4 wins and 1 loss, 40.2 IP, 24 strikeouts and a fine 3.54 ERA.
This year Smithson has compiled a 10-7 mark with a 3.50 ERA in 23 starts. |
